My wife asked me to create a box where she could keep the assorted tea’s that she has, and she wanted it to be simple – not too decorated – but of a pretty wood so she could have it sit out or bring to the table so when she had friends over.
I wanted to make the tray in the box able to be taken in and out, so that the tea could be shared around, or (with the tray taken out) the box could be used for something else, like holding letters, jewelry or other Knick knacks.
For the box, I’ve chosen to make the body out of Cherry and the top out of Mahogany, which I believe is a beautiful pairing. I have added Walnut “splines” on the corners to add strength and decoration. The tray is made of clear Poplar, and sits evenly in the box. The finish is a food-safe Shellac finish, rubbed out to a nice shine. The hinges are Brusso hinges (top of the line) 95-degree hinges – they let you open the box to 95-degrees and hold it open vs. having the lid just “plop” over.
