A simple two-piece holder that can be kept or shipped flat, then slide the two pieces together.
- Mill the wood to size. In order to make two holders at a time, the pieces are 30 inches long. Five pieces of various widths (2”, 1”, and three 3/8”). Two of the 3/8” are of different wood, to create a laminated effect
- After gluing up the pieces, you then use the jointer to flatten one side and one face, and then the planer (yellow) to flatten the other side.
- Finally, you use the table saw to cut them to their finished length (7 inches) and width (3-1/2”)
- With that done, you need to use a router table with a “core box” bit to make the divot to hold the phone in place.
- Now onto the bandsaw to cut out the two lines needed to create the two “overlap” joints necessary to join them together. Use a chisel to knock out the remaining tab, and then use a file and sandpaper to smooth out and finalize the joint.
- Last part is to use a small forstner bit on the drill press to drill out the hole for charge cord.
- Once it has been sanded down to 220 grit, I apply three coats of shellac (a food safe finish) to the phone holder, then “rub out the finish” with 320 and 400 grit sandpaper to make it smooth.
