I’ve spoken before about how I use one weekend a month to do shop improvements, to try to enhance the productivity and accuracy of my operations. So last weekend I set aside a full day to work on the shop.
I sharpened and reset my shoulder planes. These are used to clean up tenons and do other joinery work.

I had a 4-in-1 tool with two sides having files and two sides having rasps (thus, the “4-in-1” name) that I purchased that was a little rusty and dirty. I soaked it in a solution of 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water for a couple of hours, then cleaned it up with a wire brush. Now its clean and ready for use. A nice tool for a traveling tool kit.

I also had some scrapers which are great for spot cleaning up areas that are prone to tear out. The process involves cleaning up the edges with a file, then using a burnisher to “draw out” and alter the hook on the end. It doesn’t take long, so if you are using one and it stops making shavings, just spend 5 minutes to resharpen.

I also made two small jigs for the table saw to help with setting up repetitive cuts when crosscutting. They are simple but very useful.
Overall, a great weekend, and I continued on my dresser valet project. Weather was nice, time in shop was relaxing, so good times.
