For the latest project (based on the Stickley #74 book rack) I’ve got the through-mortises cut. Now its time to mark out and cut the tenons. There are a total of eight (8) tenons for each book rack (two per top shelf, and four for the bottom shelf). They’ll all be held in place by wedges/pegs – which makes the book rack able to be disassembled and stored flat. Pretty cool!
Cutting through tenons can be delicate work. You need it to be able to move freely through the hole, but not be too loose. Once the pegs are hammered home, it needs to be very sturdy. So I mark them out all the way around, and then cut them out close to the line. Then I use a variety of hand tools (shoulder planes, chisels, etc.) to get them just right.
