So I’ve been continuing my work on the joinery bench. The idea of the bench is to get a smaller bench which sits taller, so doing careful furniture joinery work (dovetails, carving, etc.) It’s higher up, with better visibility, especially for someone whose eyesight isn’t as good.
Like most workbenches, the joinery here is large. I’m using mortise and Tenon joints here, so I’ve got 1-1/2’ wide x 2” deep mortises, and very long Tenon’s. I’ll also be using dowels drawbored in place, to further enhance the strength of the joint.
I’ve gotten the legs done, and now it’s time to do the measurements on the crosspieces that will support the legs to each side. To enable me to assemble/disassemble the workbench and travel with it (for craft shows) these will involve mortise and Tenon’s, supported by bench bolts. By taking the bolts on/off the crosspieces will be in place and ready for use.
After I get done with this, it will be time to finish the whole bench. I’ll probably go with boiled linseed oil, the traditional workbench finish.
