Jewelry/Tool Chest Glue up

One of the more stressful parts of making wood projects is the glue up part of the project. You have all the joinery cut (in this case box joints) and you’ve done some test fits to make sure everything works. You have gathered together your glue, clamps and cauls (wood pieces to help apply pressure in the right spots). You’ll only have a short period of “open” time to get the product together and aligned before the glue sets and it becomes very hard to move it.

For the chest, I’m going to using liquid hide glue. It has a long “open time” of about 30 minutes and acts as a lubricant as well, which is something I’ll need for the box joints (they’re pretty tight). The hide glue is also “reversable” in that you can use hot water to break it up and loosen the joint.. There are a lot of pieces to apply glue to in a box joint, then you have to clamp them home (and sometimes use a mallet to help push them in). Then you are measuring to make sure all the sides are square and able to go. It can be very stressful.

Now that its done, I”m fairly happy with the results! Need to sand/clean off the excess glue and then on to the drawer build.
