Creating the laminated top for the joinery bench

Well, the next project is a joinery bench for the shop, which will enable me to do certain work up high, where its easier to see and cut/chisel/adjust. Think Dovetails, carving, etc.

To make the workbench top, I’ve had to joint two faces (make them flat and square to each other) plane them down to width, and then glue them together into a laminated section, roughly 34” x 18”.  The glue takes at least 2 hours to dry, though I’m leaving this overnight, clamped together.

Once its done drying, I’ll crosscut the top to length, hand plane to the top to make sure its flat, and then start on the joinery for the bench sides and front. Its going to have a “tongue” or tab on the sides, which fit into grooves on side pieces which will help contain the bench and keep the wood movement to a minimum.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to take this smaller bench to crafts fairs and farmer’s markets, and show off my hand tool skills while selling. See you there!
